The number one cause of Upvc Door Closing and Locking Problems is misalignment of the Upvc door and it’s frame. Misalignment is normally down to worn hinges and/or incorrectly packed door panels or glass. So how do you check if your Upvc door is out of alignment and how to we remedy it. 1. Take a look at the mitres on the door and frame - they are the diagonal joints in the corners - do they line up with with each other and form a continuous straight line? 2. With your door open place a spirit level on the top of the door, is the door level? 3. Open the door ever so slightly and look down the edge of the door on the lock side, is the gap between the frame and the door consistent all the way down or is it a smaller gap or even making contact at the top? If you find any or all of the above problems then your door and frame is misaligned and that will be the cause of your locking or unlocking problems and if left will only get worse to the point where you will not be able to lock the door or cause damage to the locking mechanism resulting in a multipoint failure. Adjusting the Upvc Door Hinges to fix the misalignment. Most modern Upvc doors have FLAG HINGES fitted that have a up and down & in and out adjustment option. Older upvc doors may have BUTT HINGES fitted that offer a very limited adjustment. Adjusting a Flag Hinge. Upvc Door Closing Problems1. Lateral Adjustment 2. – 3. Height Adjustment or Compression Adjustment Height adjustment can either be No 2 or No3 depending on the make and model of the hinge. Remove the plastic plug No1 and insert an Allen Key into the hole, turn the Allen Key until the door starts to pull back towards the hinge side of the frame a great tip that will help is draw a line with a pencil on the case of the hinge and onto the door this will give you a visible indication that the door is moving in the correct direction, note how many turns you have completed and adjust the middle hinge (if needed) by the same amount until the door is level with the frame. Keep checking after every adjustment to see if the door is closing and locking correctly. If the door still catches on the bottom of the frame or is difficult to lock then you may need to raise the door by removing the plastic cover No 2 or No 3 and adjusting all of the hinges up by the same amount until the door closes and locks correctly. Again mark the position of the adjuster with the pencil until you have determined which one is the height adjustment. This can be determined by closing the door and turning adjuster No1 or No2, if the door moves towards you or away from you the adjustment is Compression, If the door moves up or down the adjuster is the height. If the door has been fully adjusted but still does not close or lock correctly there are a few more things that you will want to try. The first is to adjust the bottom hinge away from the door. This will lift the door on the lock side, but be aware that sending the door out at he bottom will also narrow the gap between the lock and the keeps and any over adjustment may make the lock or door hit the frame or keepers. The second thing you can try is to move the keeps down until they are in line with the locking points - Latch, locking Bolts, Hooks and or rollers. Butt Hinges: Upvc Door Closing and Locking ProblemsButt hinges offer very little adjustment options. The old style type of Butt Hinges have an Allen Key grub screw that holds the hinge pin in position. To adjust these type of hinges, remove the grub screw and turn the hinge pin with an Allen Key to pull the door towards the hinge side of the frame. The hinge may have just one grub screw and pin or may have two. The new style type of Butt Hinges have a cross headadjuster at the top and bottom and can be easily adjusted with a screwdriver. They only offer a very small adjustment but it may be enough to fix the locking and closing problem.

Replacing all components of a cylinder lock, or working with locks that don't use a pin tumbler system, requires a different procedure for replacement. Installing a new lock of the same type will be the most straightforward option. If you want a new lock that is different from your old set, more advanced installation is required, and you may want to consider hiring a professional for the job. http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/Lost-Key-Replacement_143.jpg
"Prompt callout on a weekend with no nasty call out charges. DP Locksmiths explained what the problem was most likely to be and advised a cost. This was considerably less than some of the others I called, who on call actually didn't have someone in my area anyway despite stating an hour call out. Speedy response and excellent job all done with a smile." http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/Nearest-Locksmith_134.jpg

With summer fast approaching, it’s time to start thinking of how you can use your garden to the best of its abilities to help keep your home and family safe and sound. There are many things that Locksmith Nottingham suggests that you can do to achieve this, and we’ve listed just a few here. You should always look at your home with an eagle eye, and think in the way that a potential robber would think – so our first tip is to walk through your garden and think of what there is to steal, and how someone could try to gain entry to your home from the outside. If you have any garden furniture then make sure it is either locked away in a shed or secured to the ground. This will prevent it being stolen, but will especially prevent it being moved to the walls of your home and being used to gain access to second floor windows. Another tip is to engrave your postcode and house number on the furniture – it will act as a deterrent and if your furniture is stolen it will be easy to return it to you.
You should also consider installing high fences or hedges around your property as this minimises the routes that a thief can use to get onto your land. Locksmith Nottingham also suggest spiky plants – such as rose bushes, hawthorns or firewood – around your home, particularly underneath your windows as these will stop anyone from trying to gain access here as the thorns will leave a mark, and possibly shred their clothes and leave evidence! These are just a few of our top gardening tips, why not book a security survey today and have a professional come and look at your individual property itself? For this great service, call our team today!

Mortise locks are comprised of different levers on the inside of the mechanism. Put simply the more levers, the harder that the lock is to pick. Most home insurance providers require a British Standard 5-lever lock as a minimum requirement. This is also the minimum installation standard provided by your locksmith Nottingham. If your policy does require a higher standard, your locksmith Nottingham can sift through your documentation to ensure that you have the necessary installation to validate your home insurance policy. http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/cheap-locksmith_22.jpg
The most common call your reliable locksmith Nottingham receives if for emergency lockout situations. Of course, the benefits are enormous. No longer do you have to worry about the problems associated with keys. All you have to do is make sure you remember the code. This is also useful for other people who need access to your property. Instead of having to make sure you’re in, you can give the code to your property to as many or as few people as you like. Then, if you’re really worried about the safety of your property, you can manually change the code yourself. In fact, your locksmith Nottingham recommends you do this periodically just for that added security! What’s more, if you need to restrict access, you can obviously change the code instead of having to call a locksmith to change the locks over. Save yourself time and money by investing in a secure, digital lock. http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/Local-Locksmith-Service_103.jpg
This is a more common problem than you may think. Do you have to lift the handle and hold it in the fully up position and still struggle to turn the key? If so, this can be putting undue stress on to the multipoint locking system, the cylinder, the handles and hinges of your door. This can lead to premature failure of any or all of these parts and land you with an expensive repair bill. If you are really unfortunate your door could fail in the locked position, either locking you out or into your property. If this sounds familiar, give us a call, we will attend, assess and resolve the problems for you, normally within an hours labour charge plus parts and VAT where necessary.
