I wanted to contact you to let you know what a great job Steve has done on my windows. From new double glazing to beautiful stained glass front door panels, he couldn't have been more helpful and easy to work with, giving good advice, not promising anything he couldn't guarantee to deliver, and going out of his way to make sure what he did deliver was good. Very friendly and reliable too. I have, recommended him to my friends. Thank you Steve.

True, but most people don’t just call 911 if someone rings the bell or knocks. It likely would’ve been easier to keep them calm for as long as possible. Also what would’ve made them call the cops if they saw him/her at the door? Did they have a large gun? My thought is if them kicking in the door had any meaning, he KNEW they would be scared for a reason if they saw him first. I would think kicking in the door would lead to way faster screaming and trying to call 911. I really do wonder if they knew this person to be a danger, or minimally they would know something wasn’t right if this specific person was at their door. I am a very very cautious person but if i saw a man at my door ringing the bell I would not just immediately call 911. I really have a feeling that when this is all sorted that people are going to know who the perp is. Maybe it isn’t someone too close to them, but someone people could identify.

A lot of people don't keep their guns accessible. Especially if they have children in the house. Some people keep them locked up or unloaded. They don't think about it that if someone breaks in, they may only have seconds to get to their gun and load it if needed. Those people won't be able to do that before the intruder can get to them. Just having a gun in the house is not enough. You have to be able to get to it before they get to you. If you want, time how long it would take you to open your front door and then run into the hallway of your house or even the bedroom. That is how long the Closs' had to react to somebody breaching their door. Very likely when that door was breached, any gun he kept in the house that wasn't within reach of him was of no use to him at all.

I realized after I wrote the post that I had forgotten about the time of night. Totally agree that someone knocking at 1am would certainly have them more on guard. This also is a small friendly town though. I think the only way that they would’ve KNOWN something was really off was if they recognized the person. I could be wrong, but Barron seems like the kind of town where if someone came and asked to use your phone because their car broke down, or your neighbor rang your bell late at night because of an emergency that most people would be happy to help. But i definitely agree that a family more in the country may grab a gun to check the door late at night just to be safe not even thinking anything is wrong.
If you've been the perpetrator of the juvenile act of kicking down someone's door, shame on you. But seriously, if someone else has kicked in your door, or you know of someone who has a kicked-in door jamb, it's not as bad as it looks. It can be fixed. Typically the striker splits the side of the jamb vertically a few inches, the striker slips out of the striker plate hole and the door swings open. It also lifts the door casing. You can usually fix a kick-in door jamb by gluing it back together.
You make a great deal of sense, but I don't see how this explains him being found near the front door. The door was either kicked or shot in or both. You wouldn't run toward a door that was just forcefully opened in the middle of the night, without a firearm in hand. And if James was answering a knock at the door that he didn't perceive to be threatening, wouldn't there be time enough, after it became threatening, to at least take several steps away from the door?
