This kind of stuff goes down really fast and I am sure most people panic and don't always make the most logical move. On the part of the father, confronting the intruder might have been his only choice if he couldn't get to his guns in time. Or it might have been a reflex action to go towards the intruder rather than pick a different strategy. Because he may not have had time to do something else. In hindsight, maybe he could have run for the daughter's room and put her out the window and told her to run then taken his stand there. Who knows. But he didn't have the luxury of thinking through scenarios. Most people go into flight or flight mode. For men, it is usually fight mode by instinct and for women flight mode. So he confronted the intruder and they hid. For the mother and daughter, hiding in a room and locking the door, like the bathroom, might have been a panic instinct rather than trying to get to guns that they may not have been comfortable using or loading or that they weren't sure they could get to in time. #locksmithsherwoodnottingham
I'm still baffled by the fact that James was shot and killed near the front door, but all of his known guns are accounted for and were not removed from wherever he stores them. If someone rang the bell, he may have gone to the door without a gun, but you'd think he'd at least have had it in the back of his mind that he should maybe be thinking about having one accessible. Then, if he didn't open the door, that tells you he perceived the person at the door to be a threat. So wouldn't he at least be retreating toward his guns when the person kicked the door in? That makes me think the perp just kicked the door in right away and that was the first sign to the family of any trouble at all. But then, why would James go to investigate the noise without grabbing a gun first?
