Locksmiths-in-training can receive foundational knowledge and skills through programs offered at technical colleges or vocational schools. These would include basic courses on lock mechanics and manipulation, along with general skills like business management. From there, most trainees seek an apprenticeship, where they work alongside a professional locksmith. This allows them to gain experience in the field. It can also put them on a course toward certification.

Mortise Lock Nottingham

One of the lesser requested but more difficult procedures that locksmith Nottingham have to perform on a fairly regular basis is that of a new lock installation. A new lock installation differs from a regular lock replacement in that when our locksmith Nottingham team go out to replace a lock there’s already space in the door to house the new lock where the old lock was, with a new lock installation most of the time there isn’t any space in the door or the door frame for the lock so our locksmith Nottingham specialist has to do some joinery to make the hole in the door for the lock body and a hole in the door frame parallel to the lock body for the striking box.

Euro Cylinders – Usually found on Upvc doors, Can be either opened by a key on both sides or a key on the outside and then a thumb tab on the inside. These are the easiest and the cheapest lock to break, locksmith Nottingham reminds people to be careful when replacing these locks, to make sure you’re using anti snap and anti pick locks when installing a new euro cylinder.
Here at Locksmith Nottingham we only use locks up to the British standards set by the British Standards Institute, this is because if we replace someone’s lock with a lock that isn’t up to British standards it could mean they aren’t covered by their home insurance if they get burglarised. Obviously you can’t tell how good a lock is just by looking at it, that’s why the British Standards Institute have a set of tests that simulate different well known methods of breaking into the types of locks being tested. And if a lock passes it’s branded with the British Standards kite mark (seen below), which tells you that it’s up to scratch.

The most common of these uncommon variations is the oval shaped euro cylinder. Euro cylinders are usually found in Upvc doors and are shaped like an ice cream cone, usually that is. Sometimes we’ll get to the job expecting the first type of lock to actually discover it’s an oval shaped euro cylinder, these are a bit more expensive but the differences are purely aesthetic. Locksmith Nottingham, changes like for like and couldn’t possibly fit an oval cylinder to get more money out of you because it wouldn’t fit and visa versa the other way around. Lock picking is more art than science. There is a definite “feel” for it that is gained through years of practice. All locks are different, but the same basic principles apply. The easiest way to pick a this type of lock with limited or no experience is to use the fast and dirty method of “Bitch Picking” don’t blame us we didn’t name it! 1. Insert Tension Wrench into the Bottom or top of the key way The tension wrench is the key (excuse the pun) to picking a lock. Thanks to movies and tv people wrongfully think it’s the pick, because that is the thing that’s actually lifting the key pins to line up with the shear line. Here’s why the tension wrench is so important, as you’re lifting the pin sets with your pick the wrench puts tension on the plug. If you’re applying the right amount of torque on the plug, once the driver pin passes the shear line, the plug will rotate slightly. When you pull your pick out, the key pins will drop back down, but the driver pin will catch the edge of the plug, staying above the sheer line You’ll keep lifting pins with your pick and applying pressure with your tension wrench, until all the driver pins have cleared the shear line. So take your tension wrench and place it in the bottom or top of the key hole, Apply slight pressure in the direction you would turn the key if you had it. And by slight I mean slight. 2. Insert Pick at Top of Lock Pick your pick. I prefer the Bogota rake that has three peaks and find it to catch multiple pins making the job quicker but use what ever you have or can improvise. 3. While Applying Slight Torque to Your Wrench, Scrub Your Pick Back and Forth in the Key Hole 4. Repeat Until All the Pins Set Keep applying torque on your wrench and scrubbing the pins until they all set. http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/cheap-locksmith_35.jpg

Locksmith For House Nottingham

In some cases, the problem may lie with the key instead of the lock. Metal keys can wear out after years of repeated use. This problem can usually be solved by having the key copied by a professional. However, a key that is copied enough times will eventually accumulate errors and may not work even while brand new. In this case, it's probably best to replace the entire lock. http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/UPVC-Locksmith_196.jpg

Mortise locks tend to come in two main varieties. The first is that of the classic deadlock. This is comprised of a keyhole and a bolt. When the key is turned, the bolt either locks or unlocks into the frame of the door. The sash lock is similar but contains a latch and handles. This means that simply unlocking the bolt is not enough to unlock the door. The latch means that the handles must be turned in order to unlock the door. It may seem that the latch provides higher security, but often it is simply a case of which is the most appropriate for your door. This is something your locksmith Nottingham can help you work out with a few simple questions over the phone, if not in person. http://the-local-locksmith.co.uk/Nottingham/images/Nearest-Locksmith_131.jpg
