Obviously you can’t tell how good a lock is just by looking at it, that’s why the British Standards Institute have a set of tests that simulate different well known methods of breaking into the types of locks being tested. And if a lock passes it’s branded with the British Standards kite mark (seen below), which tells you that it’s up to scratch.

One of the lesser requested but more difficult procedures that locksmith Nottingham have to perform on a fairly regular basis is that of a new lock installation. A new lock installation differs from a regular lock replacement in that when our locksmith Nottingham team go out to replace a lock there’s already space in the door to house the new lock where the old lock was, with a new lock installation most of the time there isn’t any space in the door or the door frame for the lock so our locksmith Nottingham specialist has to do some joinery to make the hole in the door for the lock body and a hole in the door frame parallel to the lock body for the striking box.

Lock picking is more art than science. There is a definite “feel” for it that is gained through years of practice. All locks are different, but the same basic principles apply. The easiest way to pick a this type of lock with limited or no experience is to use the fast and dirty method of “Bitch Picking” don’t blame us we didn’t name it! 1. Insert Tension Wrench into the Bottom or top of the key way The tension wrench is the key (excuse the pun) to picking a lock. Thanks to movies and tv people wrongfully think it’s the pick, because that is the thing that’s actually lifting the key pins to line up with the shear line. Here’s why the tension wrench is so important, as you’re lifting the pin sets with your pick the wrench puts tension on the plug. If you’re applying the right amount of torque on the plug, once the driver pin passes the shear line, the plug will rotate slightly. When you pull your pick out, the key pins will drop back down, but the driver pin will catch the edge of the plug, staying above the sheer line You’ll keep lifting pins with your pick and applying pressure with your tension wrench, until all the driver pins have cleared the shear line. So take your tension wrench and place it in the bottom or top of the key hole, Apply slight pressure in the direction you would turn the key if you had it. And by slight I mean slight. 2. Insert Pick at Top of Lock Pick your pick. I prefer the Bogota rake that has three peaks and find it to catch multiple pins making the job quicker but use what ever you have or can improvise. 3. While Applying Slight Torque to Your Wrench, Scrub Your Pick Back and Forth in the Key Hole 4. Repeat Until All the Pins Set Keep applying torque on your wrench and scrubbing the pins until they all set.

Upvc door locks and most composite locks are called Euro Cylinders, they come in various sizes and are most commonly standard key hole shaped. It is imperative that you to measure the cylinder accurately and only fit the correct size cylinder for the Upvc door. A cylinder that protrudes more than 5mm from the handles is vulnerable from an attack called “snapping” and would allow a burglar to gain entry to your property in a matter of seconds. Removing the Cylinder: How to Change a UPVC Door Cylinder Cylinder Retaining Screw Locate and remove the cylinder retaining screw - this is a single cross head screw and is located in line with the lower portion of the cylinder. Insert your key into the cylinder and turn the key To align the cam inside the bottom of the cylinder while applying a little light pressure to the other side of the cylinder from the key and the lock should slide out. Top Tip. Loosening the handle screws may make it easier to remove the cylinder. measure upvc cylinder measure the cylinder Measure from the centre of the retaining hole to the end of the cylinder. Both sides of the cylinder will need to be be measured as some cylinders are not equal in length. Cylinder lengths increase in size by 5mm increments i.e. 30mm, 35mm 40mm, 45mm, 50mm and so on. Installing the new correctly sized cylinder. Insert the key into the cylinder and turn to align the cam in the bottom of the cylinder so that it is not protruding from the body. Slide the cylinder through the handles and secure with the retaining screw. After the cylinder in inserted lift the handles to engage the the multipoint then turn the key so that the bolt throws, by doing this you are certain to be aligned in the correct position. Mark The Cylinder Mark The Cylinder If the existing cylinder protrudes more than 5mm from the handles, mark the cylinder against the edge of the handles with a pencil before removal so that when it is removed you can measure from the retaining screw to the pencil mark so the replacement lock will be a flush fit and more secure. Upvc locks vary in price based on the size and the level of security they offer, at a minimum you should should only fit a lock that has 5/6 pins that includes security pins (this will make the lock better protected from picking and bumping) and has some measures that provide security from drilling.

I made an appt today at 11am, left work to get home on time to meet them, and NO-ONE. I called, and talked to Russ (i think) who said (at 11:20) "we're just finishing a job and we'll be out there in 20min or so." No call to me, no communication that they were running late. I complained that if I stood up my client or showed up late for work I would be fired. "things happen" When i got a little fiesty i was told "I don't work for you" (i agree, but i believe when I am paying for a service, there is a certain expectation of quality and good communcation). Russ told me "I'll not be admonished by anyone" When I said I'll find another locksmith he said "please do!"
